Process of silk screen printing
Silk screen printing, also known as screen printing or serigraphy, is a printing technique that involves using a mesh screen to transfer ink onto a substrate, such as fabric, paper, metal, or plastic. It is a versatile and widely used printing method known for its ability to produce vibrant colors, sharp details, and durable prints.
This process can be repeated for each color in the design, with a separate screen used for each color layer. By layering different colors of ink, complex and multi-colored designs can be achieved.
Silk screen printing is commonly used for printing on textiles such as t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and posters, but it can also be used for printing on various other materials, including glass, ceramics, and wood. It is a popular choice for both commercial and artistic applications due to its versatility, durability, and ability to produce high-quality prints.
The process of silk screen printing typically involves the following steps:
Design Preparation: The design to be printed is created digitally or on a transparent film. Each color in the design is separated onto different layers.
Screen Preparation: A mesh screen, traditionally made of silk (though modern screens can be made of synthetic materials like polyester), nylon, or stainless steel, is stretched tightly over a frame. The screen is then coated with a light-sensitive emulsion.
Exposure: The separated design layers are printed onto transparent films and placed onto the coated screen. The screen is then exposed to a UV light source, which hardens the emulsion where the design is placed and leaves the rest soft.
Rinsing: After exposure, the screen is washed with water. The soft emulsion is rinsed away, leaving behind a stencil on the screen corresponding to the design.
Printing: The screen is placed onto the substrate, and ink is applied to the top of the screen. A squeegee is then used to spread the ink across the screen, forcing it through the stencil and onto the substrate below.
Drying/Curing: Once the design is printed, the substrate is typically dried or cured using heat or other methods to set the ink and make it permanent.
